Hiram McDowell is a fascinating protagonist because he embodies both brilliance and moral ambiguity. His professional achievements as a surgeon are impressive, yet his personal life is deeply flawed, making him a character that’s hard to like but impossible to ignore.

The novel does an excellent job of portraying McDowell as a multifaceted character. Despite his selfishness and cold demeanor, his moments of physical prowess and his dedication to his career show that he’s not entirely without merit. This complexity makes him a compelling figure to follow throughout the story.
