I wasn’t overly thrilled with the opening pages, so I wasn’t sure if this one would be to my liking. I spend most of my time in non-fiction but do consider fiction if it catches my attention. This one just didn’t do that, but your well written insightful review helped me to determine to let this one go for now. This is why I’m glad book reviews exist! Thanks for this great review! You are definitely a professional!
I understand and respect the fact that we all have differing circumstances, priorities, exposures, and experiences that affect our preferences and perspectives. I agree that the story's first parts were as complex and arduous as life really is for a number of us, especially those in challenging situations. It's only when we open up our minds more to possibilities and to dig deeper that perplexing things could become clearer, indeed. This piece is as fantastical as a fictional work could be, but it isn't bereft of reality's truths. Thank you for your insightful words.

I agree. I had initial assumptions about the piece and had been eventually surprised in more ways than one. Yet this book didn't disappoint all. I hope you'd read and find it as worthwhile as I did. Thank you for dropping by.

The depth and breadth of the author's exposures and experiences coupled up with research and consultations with various people who helped him through brought much value to this book. I hope you'd read and find much worth in this piece like I did. Thank you for your appreciative comments.

MsTri wrote: 20 Nov 2018, 11:03 Thanks for the review, but this has actually been BotD AND BotM a few times before, and I wasn't interested then, nor am I today. I don't care to read about an orphan and her grandfather because I don't like familial stories nor do I like historical fiction.
I understand and respect the fact that we have varying viewpoints as well as book genre preferences. With life's tragedies, for one, there are times when we feel we need a break from all the drama and explore a world where better things could happen.

The initial parts of the book would make this piece too detailed or too slow for some. Yet a little bit of patience and persistence could make more sense of what happened and take the reader to a fantastical journey of imaginative mysticism later on. At times, some things are worth the wait.

Thank you for your honesty. I appreciate that. :tiphat:

There are more layers to her than what she had and could be given credit for. The story is also more complex and myriad-tinged than what I expected it to be. Despite the fantastical fiction elements, the book tackled current societal concerns versus progress dilemmas, too.

Thank you for sharing your constructive thoughts.

It's amazing to note that I would've used those very same words to express what I think you're also trying to convey. On another quirky side, it's no wonder that you've joined the club a day after I did. A decade of my life was spent on sea duty, so a "mermaid" really isn't too foreign to me, too, even if it's as fantastical as could be.

Thank you for your engaging comment. I'm humbled.

Catherine Amarachi wrote: 20 Nov 2018, 11:36 Nice review, I really enjoyed reading your review on this interesting novel, I guess I fell in the category of people you've recommended this book to. I will definitely give it a try.
It has considerably more tinges of real-life, pragmatic stuff than that of well-known fantastical works. Although it may take a bit of a more open mind and deeper introspection to proceed, it could also bring you to bits of mystical realms of traditional lore further on.

It wasn't what I expected it to be. Yet I hope you'd read and find it as not so disappointing and, instead, worthwhile as I found it to be.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
