Apollo's Raven by Linnea Tanner is a book of fantasy and adventure. This book takes place in a world that is full of mysticism. The main character, Catrin, has discovered that she has a bond with a raven and can unlock the magic of her druid ancestors. There is a hint of love, romance, betrayal, greed, and family duty throughout this book. I enjoyed the character development throughout this story and think the author did a wonderful job researching the context of the book. This created a book that felt accurate and real. I was immediately drawn in by the Celtic/druid inspiration of this book.
I enjoyed following Catrin on her journey to master her newfound powers. I also found myself invested in her relationship with Marcellus. Usually, I do not care about the romance in a story so much, but this relationship and its trials had me on the edge of my seat. It is never an easy thing to decide between what could be true love and your family. This sort of turmoil is something most people can relate to in some sense. This helps the reader create a connection with the story.
This is book one of a series. I did find this book interesting enough to want to read the sequel. I care about the characters and the outcome of the story. Of course, this is the hope when picking up a new story to read! I found nothing to dislike in this book. In fact, it's one of the best books I've read in recent memory. Furthermore, the amount of mystery and intrigue in this story was spectacular! I felt like I was waiting for the next twist and surprise in ever page.
Apollo's Raven would be best for those who enjoy fantasy and adventure. Particular interest might be for those who enjoy Celtic history and myth. If you do not like any romance in your reading this might not be the book for you. I didn't find it overshadowing, but others might. It is also worth noting that there are a few scenes that are sexual in nature.
I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is extremely well written, has an intriguing story, and was able to pull me fully into the character's lives. Lastly, the book had superb editing. I did not find a single error in grammar or punctuation.
