Superhighway by Alex Fayman is a fast paced sci-fi thriller. The book tells the story of the protagonist, Alex Fine, and his newly discovered abilities in the complex networks of the Internet.
Alex Fine is an 18 year old who’s had quite a difficult childhood. As a baby, he was brought to an orphanage in downtown Los Angeles. After two failed adoptions, he spent the great majority of his childhood in this orphanage. Instead of breaking him down, these experiences have turned him into a strong-willed young man. Throughout his life, he’s had a strong interest in education. However, his attraction to technology was far stronger.
When the orphanage installed computers, Alex accessed the Internet and discovered that he had a strange power. By simply touching a network cable, Alex was able to do anything he pleased in the complex networks of the Internet! Through these powers, Alex was able to take money from hardened criminals and give it to those in need. Superhighway takes you on the adventures Alex’s powers bring him. This book includes themes of philanthropy, love, sex, betrayal, crime, escape, government conspiracy, and revenge.
Alex Fayman did a nice job narrating this story. I felt that the abstract pieces of this story were strung together in such a way that allows them to tell a really good story. I also really liked how the characters were developed, especially that of Alex Fine. The constant battle between his morals and his actions were quite enjoyable to witness as a reader.
The reader is also taken to multiple destinations such as Los Angeles, Amsterdam, and Miami during this journey. The author’s descriptions of these settings make it super easy to visualize the places the protagonist is able to explore. Unlike other sci-fi books I’ve read, Alex’s powers (the sci-fi component of the story) don’t seem to be annoyingly unrealistic. This book seems to be professionally edited, as I found almost no errors.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I didn’t really find anything that I disliked. I had a hard time putting down the book due to the constant twists and turns in the plot. The author’s descriptions of settings and emotions of the protagonist make it super easy to feel like you’re in the story. These reasons are why I’m giving Superhighway by Alex Fayman 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to those who like fast-paced thrillers and sci-fi. I also wouldn’t advise minors or those who don’t enjoy scenes that include mature content to read this book due to the presence of drugs, alcohol, and passionate sex scenes in the story.
