A police action is a historical romance story set in the 1960s, during the Vietnam-war. James Coppi is an unpretentious hustler with no huge ambitions. Samantha Powers is a headstrong nineteen year old who knows what she wants and has no qualms about fighting for it. When the two meet, the odds could not be better stacked against a chance at romance; she is pregnant with another man’s child, he is heading off to war in Vietnam. It is instant love for Samantha but for James, not so much. What follows is a struggle to keep love alive, to stay true to promises made and to not get killed in the war.

A.A.. Freda tells a story that adequately captures the fear, excitement, uncertainty and bravery of every soldier who has ever been to war. He vividly expresses the filth and the unpleasantness of living out in the jungle where a lot of the basic amenities cannot be found. The camaraderie among soldiers is what one comes to expect after watching movies about war; witty, mischievous, fun. In most teams, there will always be those members who shirk their responsibilities and avoid pulling their weight but in a platoon at the war front, that could be the difference between making it out alive and catching a fatal bullet. The author did not forget to include this very important element.

The female protagonist is strong, inspiring and easy to root for. Everyone who has ever had a loved one go to war will love Samantha Powers. Sometimes, in the first few chapters, it doesn’t seem as though the male protagonist has a well-created character with a distinct “sound” but he eventually comes alive in the book. The author used a lot of technical terms which some readers might find burdensome but I found them to be quite informative.

I loved a lot of things in this book but top on my list is the way in which the author addresses numerous subjects while painting a very clear picture of the 1960s. A Police Action sent me on a journey of researching certain events and being shocked to find that they actually happened in the 1960s; the drafting of underqualified men, for instance.

I recommend A Police Action by A.A. Freda to all lovers of historical romance. I didn’t find anything off-putting about it at all and it was a very easy read. I rate it 4 out of 4 because the author does a great job of pulling you into this fictional word and completely immersing you in the beautiful plot.

Great review. I also read this review and agree with you that the author described a lot about what went on in the war that I did not know about. Most of the technical terms I was able to look up, which taught me more about weapons and lingo used in war.

Woah, it always amazes me when events from historical books I read turn out to be inspired by true events, even the bizarre ones. Great review! I'm not sure I would love to encounter technical terms in a historical book though.

I appreciate this and I know exactly what you mean concerning the technical terms. I guess it couldn't be helped given the topic.
