The book I will be reviewing here is Final Notice by Van Fleisher. In this book, a man by the name of Vijay Patel invents a new health-monitoring watch that is so advanced,, it can accurately predict when the wearer will die. The weather can set the watch to send them their “final notice” (a notification alerting the wearer that death is intimate) from 30 days to 10 days beforehand. The this feature is to alert the wearer that they are going to die, so they can tie up any loose ends and reach
out to loved ones before they pass away. However, some wearers have access to guns, and when they receive their notice, they decide they have nothing to lose, and things become deadlier than intended.
The characters in this book were very pleasant to be reading about. They were funny, interesting, and well written. Each character had their own unique personality - even the dog. Having such pleasant characters is crucial for an author because it means the reader will feel more obligated to continue to read, so they can learn more about their favorite characters.
The book was professionally edited. Throughout the book, no typos were detected. The writing was coherent and comprehensible. The writing style used many of imagery, while also keeping things just vague enough for the reader to use their own imagination. That is a very delicate balance, and the author did so perfectly.
I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys realistic thrillers that include every day people. It would be enjoyable for them because with the current advances in technology, it is totally believable that a watch like that could be released in the near future. It is also believable because the main threat in the book is guns, and since it takes place in America, it is very accurate that guns would be the primary weapon. I would not suggest this book to someone who doesn’t like politics and/or
is pro-gun. If someone who doesn’t like politics and/or is pro-gun was to read this book, they could likely get caught up in their own distaste for the subject and confuse dislike for the premise as the author writing a bad story.
Overall, I rate this book a 4 out of 4. It had interesting characters, it was professionally edited, and it was realistic. It tastefully touched on taboo topics while not coming off as disrespectful. All in all, this book was highly enjoyable to read.
