Denna M. Davis has written a compelling tale with The Sparrow (Emaji Nation Series, Book One) that I thoroughly enjoyed. This first installment of her series is intense, thoughtful and detailed. Written as a sci-fi action novel, the author takes us to a new world and introduces us to a new species of humans. The Emajians have differences from you and I and are also capable of great feats including flight, healing and underwater breathing. Each inhabitant of Emaji is given a different set of skills in accordance with what their destiny requires. The author is very detail oriented in her descriptions and I came away with vivid images of all that she described.
As the introductory book in the series we meet Amanda, our heroine. At sixteen years old, she has come to her grandparent’s home during summer vacation to spend time with them. Her grandmother leads her to a secret entrance to this new world. She also informs her that she is the subject of lore and is believed to be the much anticipated savior, the Sparrow. We are also introduced to a vast cast of characters who are the inhabitants of this planet. Leaders, villains and soldiers are featured along with Solomon. According to ancient prophecy, he will be the husband of the Sparrow. Not surprisingly, Amanda is taken aback that this is accepted by all even though she has just met Solomon.
We also get to meet Zorn, the villain. The author really hits the mark on this evil entity. As we are shown his kingdom and his powers, it’s easy to understand the fear that he commands. His vile companions add to the horror of this kingdom. We are given the history of this world in relation to the characters and learn that a great battle is brewing between the good and evil factions in this story. The coming of the Sparrow is necessary for any chance of victory against Evil.
Due to the graphic descriptions, some of this would be unsuitable for younger sci- fi readers but the majority of the story would be enjoyed by almost any age. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a truly well written piece of science fiction. I enjoyed every bit of this book. It was well edited and proofread. The only errors that I noticed were in the glossary section and I did not count them against the rating. I would rate this book at a solid 4 out of 4 stars. It was engaging, interesting and enjoyable to read.
I am looking forward to the rest of this series. I would list comparable fiction as The Harry Potter Series, The Hunger Games and The Divergent Series.
