One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams is a story about love, sabotage, and figuring out exactly who the Benedict sisters can trust. Meet Calder, Andi, Bryce and Destry Benedict. Four strong, quirky independent women that have been extremely wealthy since the day they were born. Their mom, Billie, is a sucker for love and has been married numerous times. Neither sister believes in a great romance after witnessing their mom cycle through multiple men. Enter Adam Stone. A mysterious, good-looking man that has the highest respect for women. Will he be able to break down Calder’s walls and make her a believer of love?
I was hooked from the beginning to the end of this book. The author did an amazing job of immersing me into the Benedict sisters’ rich and lavish lifestyle. I felt like I was transported to the extravagant parties and massive mansion in New York. Every last detail was truly perfect. In addition, what I anticipated being a typical love story turned out to be much more than that. With that said, there are some cliché romance parts within the pages but there is also a lot of depth. This story contains many layers; including but not limited to, love, mystery, and rape. My favorite layer was the issue of trust. The author built a lot of suspense in this area. There were many twists and turns as the Benedict sisters attempted to figure out who they could believe. Moreover, the conclusion of the book was a jaw dropper. I am definitely eager to read the next book.
I found the character development in this story to be great. The reader is introduced to multiple characters throughout the story. For example, there is Billie Benedict and all of her love interests, Calder’s dad, Adam and his exes, even a few drug dealers. We also get the back story of all of the Benedict sisters’ fathers, which is very entertaining. What I liked most about the Benedict sisters was their love for one another. Each sister was unique and had different interests, yet, they always supported one another. I also enjoyed that the author made each woman strong, independent and down to earth. Before I began reading this book, I absolutely thought the characters were going to be rich, stuck-up, snobs that are frequently depicted in these types of stories. I was definitely surprised when these ladies were anything but that. As a side note, although I thought the character development was great, I do wish there were a few more details about the sisters. For example, I still have no idea what profession Destry is in even though her job was mentioned multiple times. Perhaps, the author will shine some light on it in other books.
With all of this said, I am delighted to rate this book a 4 out of 4. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance and drama. In fact, this book reminds me of a TV drama series, so if you enjoy those, this book is definitely for you. I would not recommend this book to anyone that doesn’t enjoy romance. As a side note, there are a few sex scenes but nothing very explicit. Additionally, there is a little bit of foul language but it is very minor. Lastly, this book was professionally edited, and I didn’t discover a single error.
