Destruction follows when our known reality and magic collide. Matthew Tysz’ fantasy series We are Voulhire shows the truth of this statement in his first book We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.
The story centers on Galen Bray, a refugee traveling to Voulhire in accordance with his uncle's wishes. Coming from a war-torn country, Galen has to adjust to his new life in an unfamiliar place. Throughout his stay, he meets several people that guide him in Voulhire. However, he is unknowingly caught up in the imminent downfall of the nation he had come to love. The book consists of different characters' standpoints. In each chapter, the readers witness the scenes unfolding in different parts of Voulhire. These stories of the characters intertwine to create the main plot of We Are Voulhire series.
What I like about We Are Voulhire is that it doesn’t waste pages describing a scene like in 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. It focuses instead on the development of the plot. I also like that the characters are well developed and easy to remember. There are not a lot of main characters compared to Game of Thrones. I like that every character has their own contribution to the main story. Every page written on each character has weight on the development of the plot. The title of the first book, A New Arrival Under Great Skies also stays true to its name. The title actually has something to do with the plot of the book and is not just some random title for a book.
Even though I think that it’s a really great book, there are still some things that I don’t like. One of the things that I didn’t like is the lack of buildup in Midius' character arc. They just revealed his intentions in just a single chapter and for me, it is a little bit anticlimactic. They could have built up his character’s intentions more throughout the book. Another thing I didn’t like is some of the conversations don't suit the book's time. I assumed the book is happening in medieval times. An example of this conversation is between Isla and his father. I think that it could have been worded better. Instead of "Hi dad" it should be "Hello Father" to add the sense of time the story revolves around.
Since the author compared his series with Game of Thrones, I expected a lot with his first book. The book lived up to its expectations. Just like what the author said, it is like Game of Thrones but with less sex and more magic. I give it a 4 out of 4 stars and I recommend it to anyone who likes reading fantasy series. If you liked the series 'A Song of Ice and Fire' then I highly recommend that you give this book a shot.
