We Are Voulhire The fires of Virko by Mathew Tysz, takes Galen Bray to the city of Virko in search of iron, to use in his workshop he inherited from his late uncle. Lord Venden Hrelek discovers an abandoned house known as the Rendenhide, in the middle of Auburn Plains and has no knowledge of what happened to the previous occupants. He decides to move into the house and with the help of subsidies from king Wilhem he builds the prosperous city of Virko. Galen Bray made an agreement with Lord Eldus Alderman to supply him with iron. However this agreement is affected, by the tragedy that happens to Lord Alderman and the town of Hillport. Galen Bray is forced to look elsewhere for the iron and he travels to Virko with Rowan and Demitrius the monk travel to Virko to look for the iron. Galen visits the lord of Virko, Lord Venden to negotiate with him. Lord Venden asks Galen’s monk friend Demitrius, to promise to cleanse of evil, the Rendenhide. Lord Venden’s son is keeping the demon under his control to fulfil his selfish desires for power. In trying to destroy the demon leads to tragedy for the city of Virko and unleashing terror on the city of Virko.
The author shows the importance of the church in the society of Virko and the consequences of their neglect of the church. This is a story of two worlds clashing the dark world and the church. It shows the disadvantages of using magic, Hans Lord Venden’s son kept a demon trapped in his basement and eventually failed to control the demons he kept, which is a big lesson to everyone that you cannot keep or tame evil. It follows the human desire for supernatural power and the effect it has on society. It’s a story which shows how hard work and intelligence can bring prosperity.
I liked the way the author wrote this series, it is easy to read and follow, it is a thrilling story to read. This book can be read by readers of any age. It is, very educating especially to young people, it teaches them to avoid the practice of dark magic as it can have catastrophic consequences. I disliked the vivid descriptions of the killings in the book.
I rate the book 4 out of 4. It is an excellent well written fantasy story. The stories title The Fires of Virko relates a lot to what actually happens in the book.
