We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the We Are Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. I would recommend that before reading this book you also read We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies. This book is the first in the series and would help the reader understand what is going on.
This series is full of action and excitement as the main character, Galen Bray, a refugee who has recently fled the land of princes and his friends embark on a journey to find iron and end up in the middle of a vicious grab for power. The people of Virko have lost their way and no longer value religion but capitalism. The citizens focus on industry and wish to see all clergy members cast out of Virko. When Lord Venden passes away a battle of wills between the men who wish to lead Voulhire into the new age of technology takes place. A great terror is unleashed on the defenseless city of Virko and it is the job of Galen and his friends to help the city.
Matthew Tysz uses wonderful imagery to describe the places in his book. Tysz paints a vivid picture that makes the reader believe that they are a part of Galen’s adventure as well. The story is told from multiple points of view. This helps the reader understand the different characters motivations and thought process. The characters are developed well and I saw no major plot holes in the book.
I enjoyed how the author introduced new characters to the series. I believe that these characters added a lot to the book and made it more interesting. That being said, I also found it difficult at times to keep track of all of the characters. I also found some small spelling and grammar errors scattered throughout the book. I do not think that these errors took away from the novel.
I give We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko 4 out of 4 stars as I really enjoyed the characters and plot. The book was professionally edited and there were few mistakes. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading sci-fi or fantasy books. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is upset by the use of vulgar language or violent imagery.
