Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R. F. Kristi tells an amazing story about a detective cat named Inca and her team, which includes other cats, a dog, and a hamster. Although part of a series (this is the eighth installment), it is sufficiently detailed to be read as a stand-alone volume. This is an adventurous, funny book which is even more colorful thanks to Jorge Valle’s wonderful images.
Inca’s adventure is set in South Korea, where she is off with her team and human Mom. Mom has been selected as a judge for the French patisserie competition and has the chance to present there her delicious cheese. Not everything goes smoothly during the trip. Shortly after the group’s arrival in South Korea, Mom discovers that her cheese bag is gone, stolen by a competitor at the airport. Then, the cat detectives befriend their guide Ye-Jun and his dog. When the guests realize that Ye-Jung’s sister and her cat, Bo-Ming, live in North Korea, they decide to reunite them. To do this, they embark on a risky expedition beyond the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a buffer zone between North and South Korea. Will they be successful?
The mix of adventure and humor makes Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula a delightful read for every child. The detective team is smart, and its members have lovely and distinctive traits. Kristi writes with liveliness and wit, the right mix to make children dream and enjoy the story. Some remarks are ironic, but others send important messages. The hope for peace, for example, is well present throughout the book. This is a value that every child should learn, and Kristi cannot be praised enough to have highlighted it in her book.
I have to add that Valle’s vibrant pictures offer the perfect representation of what Kristi has written. With their brilliant colors and vivacity, the images are the perfect companions to every child’s imagination.
The only slight flaw I have noticed while reading Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is that the plot is not impeccable in some passages. However, this is something that only an adult reader will notice (without being particularly upset by it). The book is exceptionally well edited. Therefore, I award it 4 out of 4 stars.
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is a book that every child should read. I recommend it especially to young readers between 6 and 9 years of age.
