The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid is a young adult novel that invites readers to share in the story of Will Cleary learning about the dark side of the world he lives in. He finds that in addition to the world in which he lives, there is a parallel universe where everyone is mirrored. In this world, the mirrored beings are called echos, and their counterparts in our world are called sounds. However, there is a sinister connection. The echo lives only as long as its sound lives. This creates a problem because an unsuspecting sound can be taken out in our world if someone wants the echo killed in Echoland.
Will and his twin sister, Emmy, disappeared at the age of two. While Will was returned to safety with the help of his wolf and falcon, Emmy has disappeared. His parents never stop searching for her. At the age of 12, Will decides that he wants to join in the search. From there he embarks on a mystical journey to discover what happened to his sister.
I reviewed the audiobook version of this book narrated by B.J. Harrison and found it to be wonderful. I sometimes have a hard time staying focused while listening to audiobooks as my mind tends to wander, but this book held my attention. It was gripping, the action scenes were exceptionally well written. It was very well done. While I wasn’t reading the book, so I can’t see any grammatical errors, I didn’t notice any type of errors while I was listening.
What I liked most about this book was how intriguing it was. There a healthy amount of suspense that kept me wondering what was going to happen. It was imaginative, creative, and fun. The journey was full of twists and turns that kept me engaged in the story. The characters were creative and really brought the story to life. I especially loved hearing the story through the audiobook format because it made it easy to imagine myself in Echoland with Will. I wasn’t reading the story, but I was able to just be there in my mind as I listened to it unfold.
I tried to find something that I liked least about this book but could not come up with anything. It was very well done; the narration was excellent. There was nothing I disliked about it.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. For those young adults who love the fantasy genre, this is a fantastic book. I wouldn’t recommend it for younger readers as there are some pretty intense action scenes. But overall, I highly recommend this read!
