We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel series written by Matthew Tysz. In the first book of the series, we were introduced to the two dimensions, Earth and Caromentis. However, the second book brought to light a third dimension known as Alitheia, which is the spirit world.

I expected the second book to kick off from right where the author stopped in the first book. I expected to see a whole lot of action at the beginning and know immediately what became of the little town of Hillport. After a few pages, I began to appreciate the new twists the author introduced to the story. The industrial city of Virko captured my interest, although I felt the city was way less innocent as Hillport and its late Lord, who meant well for the city.

I liked the writer's method of creating characters with personal ambitions, yet each of these characters and their actions only become someone else's means to an end. The story was well woven and the characters' motives seem to blend into each other to create something greater.

I also commend the writer for presenting readers with such a well-edited novel. There were few errors which I figured might have been typos but they didn’t take any value away from the overall story. The plot was complex and nicely constructed. I look forward to reading other books in the series.

I admire how the writer is developing Galen’s character to become a bit more brave and assertive as the story progresses. Rowan’s arrogance never ceases to amuse me though. Demetrius, the monk, remained as serious and determined as ever and I admire his character for that too.

I feel the only aspect of the story I didn’t like was the corruption that eventually brewed in some innocent characters. I also didn’t like the fact that it seemed evil was ultimately presented above good. Although, I have hope that the other books in the series will remedy this.

I rate this story 4 out of 4 stars because it is quite unusual and refreshing to read. I recommend it to those who love stories about alternate dimensions and their effects on the human world. I don’t recommend it for those who cannot read books which include graphic scenes of violence.
