Finding a Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson is a workbook designed to help anyone in search of a job. The book contains straightforward exercises that ask a series of simple, yet important questions. I think that breaking oneself down to such specificity will help the readers in their quest for self-discovery.

The author provides a lot of sympathy for those who are currently unemployed and understands their position. He even talks about his own life, and he admits he experienced feelings of shame and failure, in order to convince his reader they are not alone in their struggles.

As a recent university graduate, I felt included in the content of the book. The author has dedicated segments of Finding a Job in Tough Times to those looking to land their first job.
Learning about different things that go into creating a well-composed CV has been extremely intriguing. For example, I never knew the difference between abilities and skills. I am also grateful for the part about building a resume. As a young, inexperienced person, it can get frustrating to put together a professional resume and I often find myself not knowing what to write. The breakdown of the composition of a resume has proven to be incredibly helpful and the sources provided by the author were fantastic.

Another part of the book I loved was the segment about re-defining one's goals. Although I have a vague idea about what I would like to pursue next, there are many things I am passionate about, and changing my career has crossed my mind a few times. I enjoyed exploring more possibilities and being given the opportunity to play with some flexibility in my prospects. While doing these specific exercises I realized I was being held back by what I was considering to be accomplishable, and what I was considering to be out of reach. I was glad to see the next chapter was about limitations, and the way we can work around them. Dr. Tim Johnson’s readers are being encouraged to create a step-by-step plan towards their goals, no matter how unachievable they might seem to be.

More than examining one’s dreams and goals, the book stops and analyses one’s internal value. Where do you get value from? I must admit I was a little baffled by this specific question because I have never stopped to really think about these things in depth.

After finishing with the introspection, the author offers really helpful advice to search for a job, and he assigns his reader palpable steps to complete. From looking up groups of people that work in the same industry you want to join to signing up for trade magazines, there are countless amazing ideas provided.

The only part of the book I didn’t enjoy was the use of the feedback loop, and the association between problem solving and technical issues. I am not at all educated in engineering, and I could not understand that specific part of the book. I have to point out, however, that this is my issue, and it shouldn’t reflect badly on the book itself.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to find a job, to those who have recently graduated from college, like myself, and to those who just want to get to know themselves better. I suggest you follow the author’s advice, and use a separate notebook, in order to be able to express yourselves better.

Finding a Job in Tough Times by Dr. Tim Johnson is not a typical self-help book, but a structured step-by-step manual, designed to guide anyone in need of finding solutions for themselves. Although I finished reading the book, the exercises might take some more time to complete. Armed with a pen and a notebook, I am ready to discover who I am and what I want to pursue as a career, and I hope potential readers will join me in this quest for happiness and success. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I think it offers necessary information that anyone should know, but that is unfortunately usually neglected in schools.

I like that you were able to take some of the advice in this book and apply it to your own job search. That is a sign of a well-written self-help book, if the reader can immediately start applying the information being given.

It really was a great book, I highly recommend it, if you are into these types of books. It is not your typical "self-help" read, in the sense that it doesn't give advice in regards to "your attitude", "change your perspective on life", etc. It is really a step by step guide on how to find a job. That's pretty cool.
