Arsenic and Old Men by Glenn Ickler is a barrel of laughs from beginning to end. I had an incredibly fun time reading and reviewing this book. This experienced writer effortlessly made a fan out of me.

Mitch, Al and Dave find themselves amongst the eccentric inhabitants of Martha’s Vineyard when Dave’s uncle, Walter Jerome, suddenly passes away. Not wanting to travel alone, Dave invited his friends and their wives to join him and his wife on, what was supposed to be, a brief trip. They soon find themselves in a pickle when Dave becomes the main suspect of murder, as he is seemingly the only one that had motive or anything to gain from his uncle’s passing. Being an investigative reporter at the St. Paul Daily Dispatch, Mitch quickly jumps on the opportunity to write an article for the paper whilst trying to figure out who the real killer is. Confusion, hilarity and plenty of waiting around ensues.

I simply loved the witty banter within this group of long-time friends and frequently found myself laughing aloud. The author does an incredible job of making you feel like you are part of their inner circle. My personal favourite interaction was between Dave and Marty; the dry and ironic humour was amazing. Ickler provides enough background and interaction to make each one of the remaining supporting characters a perfectly placed puzzle piece in his story. The settings are described with vivid detail and you always know who is talking and where they are.

The play on words, double entendres and puns throughout the book was executed with the expertise of a seasonal writer (and possible comedian).

Although there is suggestion of sex and nudity, there is no actual erotic content. The profanity is also kept to a bare minimum, making this book safe to read for younger adults who enjoy a good mystery with a bit of "dad-humour". I would happily recommend this book to anyone looking for a light and fun weekend read.

At 292 pages, I was impressed by the editing and only came across a single missing word spanning the entire book. Based on the absolute pleasure I had reading this novel, I would be remiss if I gave it a rating other than a perfect 4 out of 4 stars.

There is not a single thing I disliked about this book and there is room left at the end for another stooges…I mean musketeer adventure.
