Michael Colburn provides his readers with stories of inventive success and some amazing advice in Invent, Innovate and Prosper. From ideas and creative thinking, through research, development and prototyping, all the way to patenting, licensing and building a career, the author covers the whole process of invention. Reading about the concepts I was vaguely aware of before, helped me improve the understanding of how a creative process works. The abundance of practical, how-to information is incredible.
Reading it was easy, since the book is perfectly edited and written in a simple, direct language. This comes as no surprise, since Mr. Colburn describes the importance of cooperating with professionals and talents. Knowing that the advice comes from his personal experience adds to the value of the text. If I didn't know that he successfully applied his own advice, I would perhaps not think so much about some, at first glance, simple recommendations.
Invent, Innovate and Prosper got 4 out of 4 stars from me. I would recommend it warmly to those interested in applying inventive and innovative solutions, be it related to the problems at work, improving one's home, or taking some creative endeavor to the next level. The third chapter, where the creative process and the exercises meant for awakening the creative part of the brain are explained, might be lost on some close-minded people. I don't think that this book has the power to convince the skeptics to, for example, doodle in order to unleash their creative potential, even though it clearly explains why that might be exactly what they need to do. Introduction to the patent application process and commercialization might be better suited for them. Every reader will be able to find at least a chapter that they like or find useful.
If you realized that inventing and innovating is where your dream career lies, or if you just found yourself looking for a bit of inspiration, then this is a very nice book to read. You can learn about all the work that can follow an idea. As it turns out, there are plenty of steps and mini-goals to accomplish before the realization is complete. An idea on its own is just that, an idea in a head, but if turned into reality, it can create value. Not just monetary value for the inventor, an invention can bring incredible value to others as well. These are just some out of many lessons I took away from this book.
Chapters are followed by stories of other inventors. Learning about how important, life-changing inventions came to be is fascinating, and many references and links offer further reading directions. It is hard not to notice the creativity and the possibilities for improvement all around and within us, once someone clearly points out that creativity and observation are something to practice, not just hope to have.
