This book by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Harrison, called Demon Freaks is definitely one of the books that ingeniously and perfectly describes characters being thrown into completely strange and unbelievable circumstances. Although the characters aren't extraordinary, they were thrown into an extraordinary situation and had to deal with it. The reactions and interactions between them are, in my opinion, very realistic, and I, as a teenager, could relate to them. Here and there were pop culture references, which as a reader, made me feel closer to characters.
The book is about identical twin brothers Bing and Ron, who try to look as un-identical as possible, because, in their opinion, twins that to that are "mutant cutesy geeks whose prime talent was provoking others to vomit" and their band mates, Meat and Kaitlyn. When they went to Meat's cabin night before their SATs to study and jam a little, Kaitlyn was, as is later revealed - as usual, late, and so the rest of the band decided to play till she came. But as it turns out, universe, fate or simply a chance has other plans. To find out what happened next, read the book. But before that, read to the end of this review.
In some parts, the book was hilarious and I laughed so much I almost cried, sometimes horror-y and sometimes so sad I cried - but sad tears those times. The ending warmed my heart and made me love the book even more. Although the book is classified as CTMH (Crime, Thriller, Mystery and Horror) in literature, I'd sort it into YA (Young Adult) because in my opinion it's just more fitting for the book. Still, I'm not saying people of all ages can't enjoy this book - Young, old, middle-aged, it doesn't matter. You just have to have great sense of humor, sense for adventure and love for supernatural.
I loved the fact that author mixed 3 things that I previously thought were unmixable: teenagers, golfers and demons, and quite honestly, I didn't find anything in this book, whether about the plot, characters or writers writing style that I hated or even disliked.
This book contains no profane or vulgar words, although it got me thinking if "Jesus Christ" is one. In my personal opinion I think it isn't, but you can make up your own mind. Demon Freaks was also very well edited, since I didn't find any grammatical errors are spelling mistakes.
I give this book rating of four out of four stars because of all the reasons explained above. To bring this review to its end, I would just like to say (or write) that I encourage you to read this book with the best intentions a person could have.
