Finding A Job in Tough Times is written by Dr. Tim Johnson. This is a workbook that should be thought of as a personal self-help class. There are 48 assigned exercises with spaces provided for answers to the questions if you choose a printed copy. This is a very helpful tool for job hunts, plus it offers a website for in-person lectures and personal consults if needed. This terrific volume begins with discovering who you are with the advice given and the tasks to perform. These exercises aid with seeing yourself as an employer would during a job interview. Your personal feelings are addressed in another chapter to compound this line of thinking.

After this period of discovery, the reader/student begins to see exactly what they have to offer an employer at present. You will list your skills and abilities whether you have continued education or not. This is done with a four-column task listing jobs performed, skills achieved, their function, and abilities. You then list your negative traits for a fuller picture of yourself. You eventually redefine yourself and your goals with he continued tasks. This book educates the reader on how to make a career goal path and opportunities to get the job you want. The last sections show the student how to make a resume and go on interviews. The content is quite thorough and well-planned.

I liked the concise form of this volume and the fact that it is easy to read and understand. You are not overwhelmed with a ton of information and just seem to get exactly what is needed to help with the next job move. Information is not repeated which is common for authors of this subject to do.

I did not like that the book addresses more of the self-discovery topics rather than actual help in finding a job as the title suggests. The reader is given tips on job leads, interviews, and resumes, but the jump from your personal information to this point is large. I feel that more information on where to look for a job for a person’s particular skill set should have taken priority given the title.

The editing is superb as I found no flaws in grammar or spelling. The format is great because it is a quick read. The best reader for this volume is someone who wants to make a career change shortly. I would not recommend it for anyone comfortable in their job with a good salary range. That would not be a person wanting to move to another job.

I give this book a 4 out of 4-star rating because it is well-organized and edited. There are no printing errors and it is written in small chapter or chunks to be easy to mentally handle. It is short but informative with a great progression of information. The reader is taken from self-analysis to resumes and interviews in just the one volume. The exercises are also easy and revealing for the user. I highly recommend it to anyone that is dissatisfied with their current job or is out of work and looking for a new job.
