The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid is a fantasy book for middle school readers. It is not an easy read, it is not easy to follow, and it is not your every day type read. However, it is a book worthy of reading and once you begin, you will be determined to complete this story. The story begins with a family of mother, father, son, and two devoted pets. The story quickly adds a missing twin sister to the son and there it begins to tangle and untangle at every turn. I personally struggled to keep track of the characters and their connection to each other but I think that was my own shortcoming in reading. The two pets are Dea and Damian, wolf and falcon. Fate Sealers, Echos, Sounds, and many other mysteries fill the 368 pages.

It is best to start at the beginning. When Will and Emmy were 2 years old, they disappeared on Christmas morning. Will returned one week later with his pets, Dea and Damian and a plant. The story picks up when Will is 12 years old and determined to find his sister by attempting to retrace his return ten years earlier. His father spends his time reading and his mother spends her time diving into the pond behind the house. She works tirelessly to keep a section of the pond thawed with hoses to the hot water heater. She thinks this is how Emmy will return. Will decides to jump in the pond after his mother but he is not protected with a diving suit like his mother. Will’s pets follow him and the story begins.

I have read several middle school books (Harry Potter, Percy Jackson) but I found myself struggling to keep track of the events in Echoland. I think it is because there are so many paths to follow (above ground on Earth and below land in Echoland).

The Crystilleries of Echoland is a worthy read for a middle grades level reader and others who enjoy fantasy and magical books. I give this book 4 out of 4 stars as I found the book to be professionally edited and beautifully presented.
