Revealing a sensible approach in finding a job, Professor Tim Johnson presents a series of discussion that helps graduates and those who are recently unemployed. The book is divided into two parts: the first part helps the readers to get to know themselves better; the second part provides a lifeline to their first job or their next job. In the set of lectures and exercises, the readers will pick up a fuller understanding of their individuality, who the employer is, and a means to reach their goals. Finding A Job In Tough Times stands as a framework to help its readers embark their way to a fulfilling life.
I'm going to start this review with the things I liked in the book. I liked that its vocabulary was simple as if the author designed the book to be consumed by non-native English speakers as well. It occurred to me that the use of simple words in the book was also meant to give a broader scope on job-hunting and not exclusively on one particular field. I liked that the narration was clear and easy to understand. The order of the exercises was well-placed. The exercises were advantageously directed to build your personality. I liked the content of the short biography of Professor Johnson at the end of the book because it showed the credibility of the author to discuss the subject matter. I also liked that there were blank spaces provided in the book which were necessary for the exercises. What I liked most in the book was that it acted as a crash course, as if you were in school.
I don't think I can enumerate anything I disliked about the book. I loved it. I loved the content. I loved everything about it.
When it comes to grammar, I just found a few errors. There was a sentence where the author confused the word "been" with "being". The author also made a minor typo which I believed was totally fine. Despite the typos and errors, the book still seemed to be professionally edited.
Besides fresh graduates and those who are unemployed or recently unemployed, I recommend this book to those who are still in undergraduate school as well. I think it's important for them to read materials like this to have an idea of what can be the reasons they won't get a job. This may be subjective, but I think the book's subject matter has always been timely relevant. I personally know some people who are having trouble finding a job in spite of their degree and work experience. And I think it's about the lack of character building which the book aids the reader to establish an engaging one.
Overall, I absolutely liked the book. I'm giving it a score of 4 out 4 stars.
