Arsenic and Old Men by Glen Ickler is a crime fiction novel introducing three musketeers all playing major roles in adding colour to newspapers. This book is a page-turner and can be read by anyone who loves mystery and crime fiction, detective fiction, and as well as those who love reading about amateur detectives solving crime before the police.

The novel is a standalone in a series of novels where Warren Mitchell, who is an investigative journalist, Dave Jerome, who is a cartoonist, and Alan Jeffrey, who is a photographer for the newspaper of St. Paul Daily Dispatch. The story begins with the death of Dave’s uncle who resided at Martha’s Vineyard, and who had worked for the St. Paul Daily Dispatch and later in Martha’s Vineyard Chronicle after being fired. Three of them along with their wives’ goes to Martha’s Vineyard on a summery time to help Dave and give moral support. The story continues with Dave’s inheritance of a cottage and a land as well as an IRA account which is handled by two twins.

There are many twists and turns in the novel with Walt Jerome’s death and his postmortem examination findings, which shakes the police for the lack of evidence collected. Another death in a similar manner in Chappaquiddick shakes things up in another police jurisdiction. With no leads for the police, it is up to the three scrooges to investigate on their own to write a story for their paper.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as the novel was written with such detail that you can envision all the scenarios while reading including the surroundings. There are many scenes that would capture the heart for many reasons. Some of them are what happened when Old Walt’s ashes was scattered, the encounter with the killer(s) and Dave mentioning that he forgot to turn on the recorder after the confession, etc. I also like Sherlock Holmes used in the story.

The family dynamics included in the story add colour and life and make it stand out from other detective stories where only about fighting crime is emphasized with lack of social aspects as well as family aspects included in the story. The attention to detail in the book and the way each scenario was painted in such a way that the reader feels like he or she is there in that place, seeing everything and experiencing each event is one of the greatest experiences a reader can get while reading this book.
