A useful textbook guide to the sometimes confusing world of idioms and sayings.
Who is it for? - This guide is written for language students, specifically French learning English, of intermediate levels but written simply enough so the high beginners can understand them too. You can find an English and French translation of the book side by side, making easy reading for students that need extra clarification.
The chapters are organised into 25 areas of interest providing easy access to the target language and provides opportunities for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
There are amusing stories included that use all the idioms in context and are tailored to be accessible to learners, yet challenge them with the application of language. Following the stories are questions, designed to test the students comprehension of the story while coaxing them to use the target language. Finally, additional discussion questions incite deeper dialogue about the subjects raised in the story or in the use of the idioms themselves.
What I liked about this book was that it was very clear and easy to read. There were clear definitions and annotations to make sure each idiom was put into the correct context. As a native English speaker it was fun to read as the idioms come very natural in every day language that one doesn't realise how ingrained they are in every day language.
No profanity is used in any of the examples.
The book is very thorough so it is not a quick read, rather a guide to use over the years or in specific situations. On the whole a very useful and informative guide with amusing anecdotes, informative translations and stimulating exercises peppered throughout the book that test the students knowledge at the end of each chapter. I rate this book 4 out of 4
