Arsenic And Old Men by Glenn Ickler is a work of fiction that involves three amateur detectives. What starts out as a group outing to handle the estate of a recently deceased relative turns into a murder mystery to be solved by the three men who call themselves the Three Musketeers. Sorry, make that two murder mysteries to be solved. They say drinking can be hazardous to your health.
I enjoyed the way Mr. Ickler was able to describe people and places that allowed me to easily visualize them. At the same time, his descriptions were not so detailed as to overwhelm me. This made the story a lot more enjoyable to me. A beautiful area with a variety of personalities is a great location for mysteries to occur.
Another reason I enjoyed the story was the bit of humor he added. Who knew the car rental process, or processes as the case may be, could be humorous. Not to mention the three men testing their wives’ patience with their inability to get home when planned…multiple times. We readers could relate to some, if not all, of the give and take that is going on between the various people. As in most places, you are also introduced to some eccentric personalities. Imagine getting legal advice on a clothing optional beach.
I found the story to be well edited. The author ensured that the story flowed smoothly. As I mentioned earlier, the descriptive words helped enhance the story rather than distract from it.
Overall, I rate Arsenic And Old Men by Glenn Ickler 4 out of 4 stars. This story is made for anyone who enjoys sleuth novels, stories set in small towns and/or a bit of both items. On the plus side, the author has written other mysteries involving these men. Even better, I did not feel like there were any references to past stories that deterred from this story line. So yes, the library will be getting a visit from me.
