Finding A Job in Though Times by Dr. Tim Johnson is a short self-improvement book, and just as the title implies, its purpose is to serve as a guide to get you out of unemployment.

Although the book is called finding a job, it mostly focuses on starting and building a career in a field of interest. This makes the book more applicable, since at times its approach will not only help you to find a job more easily, but it can also guide you to choose a career path.

What I disliked the most is the lack of contrast of the strategies with personal experiences, it doesn´t dwell too much on them or in general advice. It mostly just gives a general description of the situations, that may be the cause of your unemployment or doubt in choosing a career, then it goes straight to helping you deal with them. This approach can be good or bad depending on the reader. The lack of personal experiences or general advice can make the book heavy to read; but because of the nature of the book, this is not necessarily bad.

Although short, don’t let the size of the book deceive you. Since, if you follow all the exercises the book provides (48 to be precise), you will need at least a couple of months to finish it.

What I like the most about this book, is its no-nonsense approach, and how it doesn’t focus only on giving you strategies to find a job easily. Yet it also understands the relevance of happiness in being productive, takes its time to highlight it and gives you strategies to achieve it. One of the most refreshing things about this book, is how it takes its time to discuss why looking for money in a career is not a good approach, and how you should look for a job you enjoy, and then money will follow.

That being said, if you are looking for a guide into choosing a career path, a way out of unemployment, or even if you are employed but not happy with your job, and are looking to try something new, then this book is for you. That´s why I´d recommend it to either unemployed or young people since, even if it´s not your intention to find a job, it can be really helpful as a career counselor.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars, this book will lead you little by little to uncover what do you want to do with your life and (if you do the exercises), to help you reach your maximal potential.
