The following is a thorough review of the book A Police Action by Angelantonio Freda.

Choosing a career is considered an important step in one’s professional life. And it is one thing to have a career-profession but another thing to have profession because you are out of career options hence it is always essential when you know you have chosen something out of passion; can foresee the future making positive impacts-this Freda calls it a “true lifer” because it is a career-profession with is a vision to it and when you have chosen a profession because you had no other choice-this the author calls it a “lifer”.

Set in New York (Texas), Colorado and Vietnam and published by Dorrance Publishing Co in 2017, the Freda talks about James Coppi a U. S soldier with Italian by descendant. He acquired his basic training in the army was at Fort Jackson in South Carolina; “at Fort Lewis, Washington, he acquired an advanced infantry training; and his permanent assignment was in the scout platoon of the Third Armored Division in Fort Knox, Kentucky.”

James is an obedient and responsible son as he always gave his mother money to save up for him.

They assigned him on a mission to Vietnam. But before they took off for Vietnam, they settled in Colorado for preparation training. There he met Cardiz his training fellow in Seattle.

But things got complicated when he ended up finding romance on his first day out at the preparation camp in Colorado. His behaviour began to match the description of a lifer when things without his superior authorisation, as he disappeared to Sam with no leave from office and was punished, to clean the office after work every day. This,i conclude it characterises him as a “lifer” and even more so when he started to lend money to others on the camp.

His abilities to negotiate to make people understand and agree to his terms of lending them which happened even he was in Vietnam. In Essence, practices of money lending made me believe that he was a “lifer”.

But, he proved to be a “true lifer” with gained a valuable talent as during the pre-training he proved useful when he took part in air strike training sessions. But the seniors still doubted him for mixing business with pleasure that he ended in a romance and moving in with the lady. When soldiers were given time off before they left for Vietnam, nobody believed James was going to return for the mission.

In Vietnam, James read well the maps since he arrived in there. He was acquainted to giving the right information to drop the bomb on ground every time they carried out air strikes.

Meanwhile, Samantha waited for James no matter how long it took for him to get back.

Love should be about opening up and having trust on your partner. Thus, Sam opened up to her landlord lady who doubted her she was cheating on James and told her that what she saw was a sexual assault attempt. James on the other hand, knew Sam well to keep things from him and thus he refuted the land lady’s cheating allegations.

James was angry with Sam but only for withholding things that have been happening in her life some of which were sexual assaults. It almost complicated their relationship.

He might have been a lifer, but he had sensational ideas. He told his superiors that some missions were not safe to take as there were no things soldiers could hide in. They lost four men as a result of the operations James raised his concerns.

Their time in Vietnam ended, and it was time to return home. James wrote a letter to Sam, and she did not want to read it, with fear that he was breaking up with her. She went to New York so he could tell her the love story he wrote in the letter to her face.

When she got to New York, she found him with no answer yet on what he wanted with her so they agreed to give him a week so they could talk again about their relationship. Sam got to meet his mother and siblings in-law. After a week had passed, James came to Sam with a ring proposing marriage.

In conclusion, Freda talks about an American soldier who while on a mission to Vietnam met a lady on his night out and got involved with her until they started going to her without leave and to living together while they were preparing for the initial mission in Vietnam. In spite of the love he felt for the lady, he was perturbed by the thought of not being good for the woman and thus he did not go back to her after the mission had ended. To his dismay, however, the lady travelled to New York from where he hailed. The book’s title is not speaking to its plot, and that is what I least liked about it. But it is “exceptionally well edited” and I rate it 4 out of 4 . This book is suitable for people between the ages of 21-35, more broadly for those who are not certain about their careers and those in the army.
