Have you learnt English for quite a while, but still struggle when it comes to idioms? Are you annoyed every time a native speaker is saying all sorts of expressions that you are not familiar with? Would you like to enrich your English? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, Idiom Attack Vol.1 Everyday Living (French Edition) is exactly what you need. In a simple, amusing manner, the authors, Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma, who are all native English speakers, guide you through the confusing world of English idioms. This edition has been prepared for the native French speakers whose target language is English. The manual is bilingual, every piece of English text is followed by French translation provided by Marie-Odile Kippen. However, even non-French speakers who learn English may benefit from this book.

The manual covers the idioms usage in most common topics of everyday English, such as weather, school, shopping, travel, housework, events, family, holiday, health and a few others. In general, the book contains 300 frequently used idioms, conveniently divided into 25 thematic chapters. Every chapter focuses on 10-15 idioms and offers the examples in both languages, an exercise on filling in the gaps with an appropriate idiom and a story with questions for discussion. Every five chapters a reader is invited to take a review crossword to revise the material.

As a professional ESL teacher, I particularly enjoyed a smart organization of the book and rich content of every chapter. Not only do the students learn the meanings of idioms, but they also have a chance to study and revise them. That is why I would definitely recommend Idiom Attack Vol.1 Everyday Living (French Edition) as a manual for self-learners and as a reference for the ESL teachers. Presented material allows students to practice reading, writing, listening and speaking. In addition, it is possible to utilize specific chapters of the manual as an extra reference for deeper learning of particular topics in spoken English.

According to the authors, the book is aimed at the students with intermediate and advanced levels of English. However, the authors highlight that the simple language makes the volume suitable even for the beginners. While I appreciate the language simplicity, I doubt that the intermediate and advanced learners of English would gain a lot from the manual. I believe that the idioms covered are much more appropriate for beginner and pre-intermediate students.

I would also like conclude with a few more things that prove Idiom Attack Vol.1 Everyday Living (French Edition) is worth attention. The manual contains a rather convenient index that offers easy navigation through the whole volume. The learning material is combined with entertaining illustrations which contribute to keeping a positive atmosphere throughout the academic process. And as a final bonus, the book is perfectly edited.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for being a wonderful educational resource for anyone learning English, especially French speakers. If you ever feel attacked by English idioms, this book will definitely help you conquer them.
