Are you a graduate? Are you unemployed and definitely want you change your status? Are you employed but not enjoying your work? Do you have a dream you want to maximize? If any of the above questions is "yes", then Finding A Job in Tough Times, by Dr. Tim Johnson, is the book to get busy with.
This is not a story. These are real time lessons, advices, and years of experiences of Dr. Johnson. These advices are not just academic as colleges don't train one on how to be employed. The book contains many important questions en route to self-discovery. Questions like: who are you? What have you been through? What does the future look like? Life changes, time changes, employers change, and technological changes contribute to finding a job. Reading a book like this gets a reader familiar with the changes.
It offers 48 good exercises. I am a fresh graduate, and as such, must get every detail the book has to offer. While attempting the exercises, I noticed that one exercise can be linked to another exercise. I appreciate the author for doing this. Providing answers to these exercises poses a greater advantage in creating opportunities, building a good resume, activating and achieving plans, reaching out to friends, handling interviews, and getting leadership skills. Differences between abilities and skills are explored with great examples. I got to understand that abilities and skills are different subjects. Abilities are developed into skills for practical uses. The essence of the book is made vital as it includes six steps to a paycheck starting with oneself. They include; redefine yourself, redefine your goals, re-examine limitations, create opportunities, never say no, and focus.
This book is rated four out of four stars with no doubts. The exercises enable the reader to think beyond imagination, and send the readers into a deep emotional and psychological state, where all that matters is to be a better, equipped and competent employee. Beforehand, writing a good resume has been challenging and enigmatic. Understandably, I have to concede to reading the book twice to know what to include in a resume, and how to conduct oneself before and during an interview. As mentioned by the author, interview is the way an employer gets to know who you are. I clearly agree with him.
No better way to relay the principles than to be conversational. These principles offer practical steps, that if strictly followed, finding a job will be easy. It contains some real life stories, making it very engaging and lively. It also provides a few URL links which serves as additional source of more quality informations to interested readers.
The book also educates readers on taking advantage of an available opportunity as opportunities are rare. Platforms such as LinkedIn is encouraged, showing the book is modern. Highly recommended to graduates, like myself, and unemployed. Career-builders will find this book informative. This book is evergreen and must be kept.
