Guilt by David Taylor Black is an excellent mystery that keeps you on your toes.

It begins with a murder, the arrival of a writer, and a mysterious and not quite so friendly town. Dan, the writer, is separated from his wife and is visiting Hope Town to do a story on a cholera outbreak that killed so many of the town’s people. Instead, he ends up the lead suspect in a murder investigation.

Dan goes to the only place that he knows has information about the outbreak, the library. After making fast friends with the librarian, named Cat, and being rejected by most of the town, Dan decides to use her knowledge and friendship with the town’s people to get more for his book; however, instead, he ends up finding a dead body floating in the water.

Curiosity gets the best of him and Dan ends up touching the body and vomiting on it, leaving his DNA everywhere. This, in turn, casts suspicion on Dan as a suspect. Thankfully, Cat was there, when the body was found; however, Cat’s advances toward Dan makes the Constable, Ronnie Anderson, hate him and suspect him even more.

In an effort to prove his innocence, he starts an investigation of his own with the help of Cat. The town starts opening up to Dan and just as he thinks they are closing in on the killer, things start to spiral out of control. His wife asks for a divorce, an intruder breaks into his house, shoots him, and then tries to kill him, and more bodies start popping up, and the killer seems dead set on pinning these murders on Dan.

As the evidence continues to stack against Dan which leads to his arrest. His wife, Susan, an attorney, comes to his rescue, but ends up questioning his loyalty as a husband and his innocence. With the real killer still out there, Dan is desperate to protect his wife, who ends up being the next target. Will he prove his innocence and get to her in time?

Guilt deserves 4 out of 4 stars. This book is excellent and keeps you coming back for more. I have nothing bad to say about it. It not only had an awesome storyline, but it was also very well edited. I cannot wait to read the next one. I also loved that there were very few bad words in this book. It’s a good clean mystery.
