The idea of a love story amid a war thrown setting was appealing to me, so when I read the synopsis of A Police Action by A.A. Freda, it felt like I hit the jackpot. Freda, with his experience in the Vietnam War, puts together a coming of age story with James Coppi, a smart, sly man set to fly for Vietnam and Sam Powers, a beautiful, young girl with seemingly poor luck when they met.

When James and Sam met, It was safe to say they'd fallen for each other (although on James's part, he was unsure). Unfortunately, it happened during the worst timings ever with James preparing for his time in service and Sam unwillingly pregnant with someone else's child. Although, it didn't stop them from being together as James helps Sam with her reluctant pregnancy, financial, and housing problems. In return, Sam offers her love and care for the man who turned her for the better. Finally, when James was on the brink of flying far away to a foreign country, they had to face the elephant in the room that was plaguing them from the start. For Sam, who's future was starting to brighten up, was she going to wait for a man who's fate was unknown? For James, who hasn't declared his commitment to a relationship with Sam, was he even going to start one if he did come back alive?

To start, what I loved the most about A Police Action was the character development. The two main characters, James and Sam, were both complex characters. James, although smart and capable, was a troublemaker, making big money by being a hustler. Sam, although raised by a preacher as a father, had gone rebellious, which ended with her biggest mistake yet, getting pregnant.

As the pages went by, James put his smarts to good use, serving as a higher rank than his fellow mates and getting recognized by the higher-ups. His proactiveness was something to value, especially in dire situations. Even when he was hustling, the guy was smart not to leave any trails, and that was something you had to admit. His wonderings and thoughts about the war and its consequences were something I admired about him. In spite of his shortcomings, he always came through as the kind, considerate person he is.

James's love interest Sam was also not an exception to the character development. Before meeting James, she had a rough start for her life as a young, recognized adult, but that didn't stop her from living her life to the fullest. She grew into a strong, smart, independent woman who can take charge of her life even without her man by her side. I respect her for believing in her love for James to the extent of being faithful to him as she waits. She stayed as a good girl, hoping that fate would be kind to James and her. She fits the bill of the sentence, it takes a certain kind of woman to live the military life.

Other than James's struggle with his love life, he had to deal with another major conflict, the impending Vietnam War. All the scenes containing firearm training, interactions with fellow soldiers and higher-ups, and the journey to Vietnam and back, were all so real and delightfully captivating without being too grotesque. I appreciated this part of the book because it offered exposure to the things millennials weren't able to experience, other than the ones being in a textbook. The feeling of fighting for your life, the emotions felt by loved ones that were left behind, and the injustice of serving a losing war are some highlights.

I can tell the book was professionally edited and had a few grammar mistakes. It made for a smooth read that I enjoyed considerably. The delivery of the passages wasn't overbearing, so I hadn't felt restless reading. They were also some periods that weren't supposed to be in between words. All in all, the book had little editing mistakes.

I would recommend this book to love story enthusiasts, who in turn, also love old war settings. People who also appreciate a touching history of the olden days would also like this book. Due to the book having a few explicit love scenes which I happen to dislike a little, I wouldn't recommend this book to younger audiences. Finally, I graced A Police Action by A.A. Freda, a 4 out of 4 stars with its outstanding plot, realistic characters, and the touch of history.
