[Following is a volunteer review of "A Police Action" by A. A. Freda.]
James Coppi is a young man who has been drafted into the Vietnam War. He reports to Colorado barracks for training before being deployed. One night before training begins, he and his friends hit a bar, and there he meets Samantha Powers. Sam, short for Samantha, is a young troubled woman who had left her home in Texas after experiencing problems with her parents. She is pregnant and plans on getting an abortion. When she opens up to James about her problems, he decides to help her and their relationship progresses very fast in the few months before James is deployed. However, James is not sure about the commitment. Will he come back to Sam after the war?
A Police Action is a war story as much as it is a romance. A. A. Freda narrates the difficulties soldiers have to endure in war; sleepless nights, depression, going for days without a decent shower, the ever-changing weather, and the horror of losing their friends during battle. He also creates a vivid picture of what military spouses go through, the sleepless nights wondering whether their soldiers are safe and the burden of raising their families alone. He creates a reality of the effects of conflict on individuals which immensely captured my attention.
The love story between James and Sam is beautiful, turbulent, and chaotic. After helping Sam with her problems, James is her hero. However, James believes he is flawed, an opportunist and isn't sure what he'll do with his life when he leaves Vietnam. He believes Sam's love for him blinds her from seeing all his faults. Their love, however, blooms to be a beautiful happily ever after.
My favorite aspect of the book was the characters. All the characters evolve so much in the story. Sam's friend refers to her as a lost child before she met James. As the story unfolds, she becomes focused, determined and responsible. James is scared of commitments, but by the time he leaves Vietnam, he's overcome his fear. The author creates characters that are flawed in their humanity. James is an intelligent man, but sometimes he's disrespectful to his seniors and doesn't follow rules like he should. Another instance is when Kathy, Sam's friend gets jealous of her friend because she is happy. These instances show that we're all imperfect in our existences.
This book is perfectly edited. I wouldn't recommend this book to children as there is sexual content and instances where profane language is used. I give this book a perfect rating, 4 out of 4 stars. This is a good book for people who are interested in history, specifically the Vietnam War. I also recommend the book to people who enjoy a steaming love story.
