[Following is a volunteer review of "A Police Action" by A. A. Freda.]
A Police Action is a historical book written by A. A. Freda, an award-winning author. The title of the book is derived from the term that the U.S government used to refer to Vietnam war. Despite being a full-blown war, they refused to call it war. Instead, they euphemistically addressed it as a police action. This is an interesting book that combines military and romantic themes to produce a sizzling-hot script.
James Coppi is an Italian, drafted into the U.S army. He is a courageous man, who knows how to maneuver out of any situation. Furthermore, he loves doing things in his own way, even if his own way may put him into trouble. Trouble appears to be his middle name. He is from Bronx in New York. Accordingly, Coppi reports for duty in Colorado, to train in preparation for his mission in Vietnam. He is an apt trainee, with previous knowledge of almost everything the training entails. Consequently, he catches the eye of the superiors and they take advantage of his skills. He is placed under the command of Captain Furillo. On his first weekend at the barracks, he heads to Colorado Springs with fellow soldiers. He meets Samantha Powers, a young girl who ran away from her home in Texas to get a life from her domineering Preacher-Dad. Coppi is heading to Vietnam for the war in three months. Will their love stand the test of time?
The characters in the book are well-developed. James Coppi and Samantha Powers are the main characters. The language of the book is simple with a few military terminologies. The suspense aspect is profoundly-developed. The descriptions of scenes are articulate. The subtitles are interesting. They prompt you to read further since they raise curiosity. My favorite is chapter 8, ‘Can a Man Really Love a Sergeant?’ This chapter is humorous. Sergeant Camby struggles to report his verbal assault by James Coppi. A. A. Freda describes this embarrassing situation so well, giving the reader a feeling of omnipresence.
I most love the inclusion of a love story within serious military matters since it moderates the mood of the whole book. I also like the character of Coppi and his easy way of fitting in. I do not like anything least. However, I found it unrealistic that a fifteen-foot-long snake would fit well around the neck of a normal-sized man. The book contains erotic scenes and vulgar language. I came across a few errors. This is an amazing book for lovers of war books. Additionally, it’s also recommendable for lovers of erotic reads.
I will not rate it 3 stars because the mood of the book is balanced and it’s very entertaining. Some scenes in the book are rib-tickling. A good example is when Bradley shakes Coppi awake, thirty minutes before Coppi’s shift, after mistaking fireflies for attackers with cigarettes in their mouths. I rate A Police Action 4 out of 4 stars.
