[Following is a volunteer review of "One Way or Another" by Mary J. Williams.]
One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams is a story of four sisters living in a Manhattan mansion left to them by their wealthy grandfather. Calder, Bryce, Andi, and Destry Benedict live with their mother, Billie. Billie isn’t a very dedicated mother and leaves the sisters on their own most of the time. This lack of attention from their mother has made the sisters very close, making it necessary for them to learn to take care of each other. The sisters keep an eye on Billie because she tends to be taken advantage of by her male companions. Her current boyfriend, Ingo Hunter, is worse than her usual lovers so the sisters hire a private investigator to check him out.
The main plot of the story is about Calder and her current boyfriend, Adam Stone. Calder is always cautious about men only being interested in her money, but Adam seems to be different. It’s been a while since she’s been in a serious relationship and hopes she’s right for trusting him.
What I liked most about One Way or Another was the sister’s relationship. It was refreshing to find they weren’t typical spoiled rich kids, fighting and bickering over everything. They genuinely love and care for each other and are also productive members of society. When something happens in their lives, they can depend on each other to help them through it. I would love reading more about the Benedict sisters and was happy to see the author has written six books in the Sisters Quartet series.
What I disliked about One Way or Another was the lack of character development for the mother, Billie. She seemed like an interesting person with many flaws, and I would have felt more involved in the story if I knew more about her. I think a chapter dedicated to her relationship with Ingo would have helped me understand her feelings and motivation for the things she does.
The story kept me interested, and I felt invested in the sister’s lives, which I think is a must for a good book. I’ve given it 4 out of 4 stars because of the in-depth character development and evident care the author put into this story. I didn’t find any grammatical or spelling errors, so I’m sure the author had a professional editor working on it. I’d recommend One Way or Another to adults that are interested in love stories with strong female characters.
