[Following is a volunteer review of "The Date Farm" by Jack Winnick.]
The Date Farm by Jack Winnick is an international thriller that tells the story of terrorists who attack a Beverly Hills shopping mall during a rave concert, killing and injuring over a hundred young people. Law enforcement is baffled. What was the motive for this bloody attack? Days later, disruptions in the government’s secure communication networks were detected. The Department of Defense and Homeland Security networks had been hacked at the highest levels. Three weeks later, an attack was launched on the financial district in New York City and a precious resource of the United States government was stolen. The attacks must be related, but how? FBI agent, Lara Edmond, and her husband, Uri Levin, a member of Israel’s Mossad secret police, are summoned to help unravel the mystery and stop the terrorists. America seemed to be caught with their guard down in this elaborate and brilliant terrorist plot.
The twists in this story are shocking. More than once, Lara and Uri used their MacGyver-like skills to narrowly escape a dangerous situation. I gasped out loud at some of the developments. At one point I had to stop reading because I was so angry and disgusted at the terrorists. I had a very emotional reaction to this book. It was a wild ride!
The description of the military technologies was fantastic. Parts of the story are similar to recent news events, which made it seem real to me. Other parts were creative and imaginative and fun to read.
The author, Jack Winnick, has a rich vocabulary. The Date Farm is a step above a typical novel in the vocabulary category. I learned five new words including “ersatz”. After reading this book, Jack Winnick has become one of my favorite authors.
The Date Farm was well-written and professionally edited. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in politics, espionage, the military, and technology. I can’t think of one critical thing to say about this book. I loved it.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The story inspires pride in our country’s intelligence agencies and military branches. I have a deeper appreciation for intelligence agents who insert themselves in extremely dangerous situations for the sake of our country’s defense. Their motivation is not fame or glory. No one can know their names or the details of their work. Their motivation is the love of country and patriotism.
