Review by kaylahk17 -- Devil Among Us by Jack Winnick
The Devil Among Us by Jack Winnick is another astounding crime thriller. This book is the sequel to Jack Winnick’s previous novel, East Wind. While it is a continuation of Lara and Uri’s story, the book can be read as a stand-alone novel. The story begins in New York where a synagogue is blown up on the Jewish religious holiday, Yom Kippur. Hundreds of members are killed or injured in the blast, but nobody knows who caused it. Lara is a United States agent who is an intelligent computer whiz but also has skills in the field. Uri is a well-known Israeli Massad field agent, brought to the United States to work with Lara. The two are assigned to figure out who committed the explosion in the synagogue. The alliance between the United States and Israel hangs in the balance as the duo fights to uncover the truth and bring the perpetrators to justice.
This book continues the story of Lara and Uri where it was left off in the first book of the series. I enjoyed being able to continue with them but through a completely different plot. While I appreciate knowing the first book and their experiences, reading the previous book is not necessary to thoroughly enjoy this book. The plot is excellent as a stand-alone crime thriller, but it also goes together well with the previous book.
Jack Winnick has a way of writing that intrigues the reader but also teaches them about different military or crime events that the reader may not have known or understood. I most liked how this fast-paced story could bring me through real events of the past while relating it to the fictional events in the book. This made the story a more real, well-rounded experience. I was able to read and understand military tactics as the different characters explained them through normal conversation. I also enjoyed the various points of view the book provided. It was easy to see into the minds of government officials, soldiers, and agents from both good and evil.
Sometimes I felt like I was missing a piece to the story as I was reading but it was later revealed, answering the reader's questions. The way the author constructed the book to make the reader question things was remarkable because I felt I was doing my own investigating alongside Lara and Uri. I enjoyed reading this book so much, there was nothing I did not like about it. The writing and plot worked together to create a wonderful book that left me wanting to read the next book in the series.
I would easily rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the masterful way Jack Winnick put the story together. The book was a page-turner that allowed the reader to investigate along with the team as they worked to solve the crime surrounding the synagogue explosion. This book does contain minor language, sexual scenes, and violence that would not be appropriate for younger readers. The descriptive level of violence and sexual scenes is just enough to fully immerse the reader in the story without being vulgar. The book appears to be professionally edited and does not contain any major grammar errors. The Devil Among Us provides an immersive experience for the reader to enjoy, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a well-written, exciting book.
