An ancient artifact, an unscrupulous mining company, and an odd adventure of a tough and often thought, rebellious preteen makes Brave Heart by Charlie Sheldon a very satisfying read. We are carried over the terrain of the Olympic mountains, while a grandfather and his granddaughter try forming a relationship and stand together against everyone from child protective services to the mayor and the mining company.

Charlie Sheldon has delivered a novel that really grabs your attention. Sarah, the preteen, comes face to face with an ancient bear on her very first outing with her grandfather. She then sketches what she saw in a notebook but Tom nonetheless shows disbelief about what she has seen. Shortly after this Sarah runs off in the mountains and disappears for several days. When Sarah returns she has a remarkable tale to tell. The novel then switches to the past as Sarah explains what happens to her while she is missing. The author ties all this into Sarah's problems and the problems of miners going into lands that are beautiful and trying to raze them for monetary gain. There is plenty of tumultuous turmoil for character building and you find your self totally immersed in the novel.

If I had to say there was something that I didn't like, I would have to say, in the beginning, the book is a little predictable. As far as Sarah goes, you know right away she isn't a bad child and that takes some of the tautness of drama out of the book. I can't really say this was a detriment because I wanted her to be good, but if the author was aiming for an amount of disbelief of her story for drama purposes, he missed that mark.

This is honestly a wholesome tale for all ages. I believe there is a message of hope that teens, preteens, as well as any adventuresome adults, would enjoy. The realistic dialogue does not contain any profanity. There is some mild violence but nothing offensive. Each very human situation was addressed in a realistic way, and I think this made the novel a little deeper than thought at first glance. One lesson is everyone needs someone they can trust to give them a second chance.

I awarded this novel four out of four stars for being an overall entertaining read. Some novels you read to fill up time but this novel leaves you wondering where the time went. The novel is obviously professionally edited. I noted one discrepancy that says that Sarah had left her pack at camp, then when she comes back they ask where her pack might be. That was the only error I encountered.
