Review by Andif -- 2612 Cherryhill Lane by Glenn Vo
2612 Cherryhill Lane is a very interesting romantic book authored by Glenn Vo articulating turn of events keeping the reader to yearn for more as the book is built on love, work, family and relationship of a great footballer known as Jonathan. At the eleventh hour of the match, Jonathan set Katy Tigers to victory for State Championship Trophy on a thrilling match by scoring a fantastic goal charging atmosphere into celebrations in the field as the game ended few seconds later. His family organized a party at Chuy’s restaurant to celebrate the victory to impress Jonathan. At the ordeal hour, Jonathan with her sister Gabby had a ride to Chuy’s. "I can’t wait to see you later, I told you I got you something special’’ this was the message Jonathan received on his phone from his girlfriend, Lacey. He struggled to get his phone and type reply the message without looking at the road and run into an oak tree. Gabby died while Jonathan narrowly escaped but his legs were amputated because of the accident which then changed his entire life.
Jonathan’s father, Jeff resolutely blamed Jonathan for killing her daughter through texting and driving on Cherryhill Lane and slapped him at the hospital out of anger. He abandoned his son for five years without talking to him. Jonathan had bitterness as his dream of playing at first division at Texas university was cut short nonetheless scholarship to study at the same institution was also in demur. Dominic assisted Jonathan by pushing him around; he took him to rehabilitation center and assisted him in whichever way Dominic was able to. Jonathan refused to use prosthetics. The two became friends beyond being personal assistance. Lacey abandoned Jonathan because of his condition.
Two years later, Jonathan joined Texas University to study political science as his major. He played video games together with Dominic. Dominic helped Jonathan to live another life together without legs until they broke up as Dominic wanted to have more time with his girlfriend than Jonathan. Jonathan chased away Dominic out and loneliness came to Jonathan although His mother Rose would call once a week. Samantha became personal assistant thereafter. And this time, friendship between him and Samantha was not normal. He started to develop affection towards Samantha. The two lover-birds went to bible study together played video games and even slept in the same room without messing each other. In one way I can say Samantha was a natural medicine for Jonathan’s therapy he needed most, it was written in his face coupled with deep feeling he had with him. Jonathan did everything to impress her. He participated in race although he was in a wheelchair and emerged number one. He shaved his hair, beards at Dan’s barber shop and bought new clothes which he wore to surprise his girlfriend.
Samantha loved Jonathan so much he encouraged him to forgive himself from the horrific accident that took away her sister away and to stop blaming himself for the incident. She managed to convince him to participate in talk he was invited to talk about text and driving and Samantha secretly invited Jonathan’s parents to attend the same ceremony. All the speakers talked of forgiveness and Jonathan narrated the incident that happen many years which was still fresh in his mind. Jonathan and his father reconciled in the same venue. Samantha moved to medical school for interview leaving Jonathan to be attended by Kylie. A sense of abandonment settle on his mind. Samantha spent most of the time in the library. She wanted to pursue her dream and hardly communicated with Jonathan. The two broke up the day Samantha came back during recess. He blamed her for leaving in expense of her studies.
The Glen Vo tunes the story to its end where Jonathan battled stress from break up with assistance of Ann, the pastor at bible study. He still felt that he loved Samantha and this disturbed his mind so much. Jonathan decided to surprise his lover if any case she would be there for him. He went back to Dr. Bui to try walk with prosthetics. After several days of physical therapy he managed to walk. Jonathan reunited with old friend Dominic when her mother invited Dominic in their house. At the wedding of Samantha’s sister, Samantha was not only surprised at to see Jonathan but also he was in prosthetics. Love and happiness sprung as Jonathan held Samantha’s hand and he kissed her lips.
2612 Cherryhill Lane by Glenn Vo is a very interesting book where scenes and events are systematically plotted making it easy to connect events. The author has used biblical allusion such as "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not learn on your understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths" Proverbs 3:5-6(ESV).
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars there was no significant typos noticed while reading the book. It was professionally edited.
I recommend this book to those who like love stories and to that person going through hard times in relationship especially disability issues and breakup.
