Review by kiptoo98 -- Nadeems journey by Sherine Anniruth
Nadeem`s Journey is a book written by Sherine Anniruth, it is a devastating story being shared by a loving mother about her son Nadeem Rajah who was healthy and full of energy up until he was diagnosed with cancer at 25 years of age. She takes the readers through the journey of his life from his childhood into adulthood and his battle with his illness. She wrote everything from her personal experience and that of her son.
In chapter one, the writer begins by narrating how the matron at the hospital told her she had ruined her life when she found out she was pregnant, since she was only 22 years and unmarried, despite this she loved him from the moment she knew she was pregnant. She gave birth in April1990 and named the baby boy Nadeem. He grew up and became an outstanding student and he loved cricket so much that in grade 2 he was selected to play in the school cricket team. At the end of 2011 Nadeem was diagnosed with keratoconus which was the start of his medical problems, he then developed psoriasis which is a skin condition. In 2007 he received a corneal transplant, despite this he completed year 12 with excellent results and he received the Dux award.
The writer describes their move from South Africa to Australia, she gives an explanation on how hard it can be living in a foreign place where they knew no one. In September 2014 Nadeem graduated and got a job with an engineering company, he then found a girl and fell in love. He decided to stay healthy and lose some kilograms. At 25 years Nadeem became sick and the doctors told him he had gastroenteritis but when he was taken to the emergency room he was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma (cancer). The writer tells the readers about the events that took place after Nadeem was diagnosed and how he never gave up hope of getting better. Nadeem`s mother was loving and caring all through his illness up until he succumbed to the cancer.
I would recommend this book to people with terminal illnesses, their relatives and people giving them palliative care. However,I would advise every person to read this book, this is because the writer shows the courage and hope that her son had even when he was really sick. The writer has added pictures of every moment in Nadeem`s life, this pictures help the readers relate more with the writer. The writer also gives an insight on the negligence of doctors and this leaves one wondering what would have happened if things were done differently.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, because the book exceptionally edited. I liked everything about this book and the fact that the writer included a glossary explaining the meaning of all the medical words she used adds more points. She has also included pictures making the book even more interesting
