[Following is a volunteer review of "Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat" by R.F. Kristi.]
If you’ve read any book in the Inca Book Series, you’ll notice they share one thing in common: adventure. There’s always a new place to go and a task to accomplish. In Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat, the destination is Sri Lanka and the task is to recover a stolen antique sword. Join Inca and her furry friends as they embark on an adventure to recover the stolen sword.
As the name depicted, R. F. Kristi structured this book in a diary format. Written in the first-person narrative, Inca documented her activities from the day she got wind of the Sri Lanka holiday trip till the day it ended. Her diary started from the morning of Sunday, 10th June to the evening of Sunday, 17th June. In seven days, they had an adventurous holiday in the sunny island of Sri Lanka. The narrative was easy to follow as each event had a time stamp. This diary format has become Kristi’s signature writing style in most of the books in the Inca Book Series.
What I liked most about this book was the mini introduction of the major characters at the beginning of the book. This gave me prior knowledge of each character’s role in Inca’s diary. It was easy to relate to them individually. In the same vein, Kristi’s character development was top-notch. I noticed that some characters from the previous books didn’t appear in this one. Hence, there wasn’t an overload of characters that would have stretched the book’s length unnecessarily. However, she did well to mention them at strategic points in the book. I commend the author for this thoughtfulness.
Every time I read children’s books, I look out for the illustration. There are two things I check. First, the illustration has to be colorful enough to make a reader stick to the story. Secondly, the illustration at any point must have a connection to the adjoining text. This book passed these litmus tests. Kudos to Jorge Valle for the colorful and relevant illustration.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. It was perfect in grammar, typography, and editing. I rate it four out of four stars. I recommend it to any child who loves a good adventure story. Parents can also get it as a bedtime storybook for their kids.
