Let me start off by saying I loved reading the book Bittersweep by Wareeze Woodson! I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book starts of with the main character, Elizabeth Campbell, arriving into her old home town under an assumed name and was rescued from being trampled to death by horses by a good looking man named Joseph Honeycutt and there is an instant attraction. Of course with this being a romance there is a rival man vying for the affections of Elizabeth Campbell and also for the affections of Joseph Honeycutt. This book has all the classic elements of a historical romance, castle rustling, bank robbery and murder. I literally could not put this book down until I finished it.

Without giving too much of the book away I will finish summarizing the book. Elizabeth is the new schoolteacher of the town of Bittersweep and stays in a boarding house with the daughter of owner and a bank clerk. Elizabeth keeps going to this old, burned down, abandoned house that you kind out is the house were Elizabeth grew up in and she is searching for something important and when she finds it she learns more about herself. After one of her visits to the house after the bank was robbed of federal gold, Elizabeth finds a dead body and lands herself into a bit problem when the fumbling deputy accuses her of murder. With the help of her love Elizabeth goes about clearing her name when the deputy refuses to believe her pleas of innocence.

One of the elements I liked about the book was the author was very descriptive with her words and I felt like I was in this small town in Texas. When an author can do this you know this will be a good book. I also loved how strong the female character is, especially with what she had to go through in her life. She didn’t let these things get her down and open herself up to love. Although she does have trouble when she learns some aspects of past, but with the love of her man she overcomes this. Another thing I liked about this book is that it is a clean romance. Yes there is kissing and a honeymoon, but the author does not go into specifics, which is very refreshing in these days of romance books. I would honestly say there is nothing I did not like about this book.

Anyone who loves romance books, especially historical books, would love to read this. I have read literally a thousand romance books and can say this is up there is a favorite of mine. I know whoever reads this book will love it just like I did.
