[Following is a volunteer review of "Strong Heart" by Charlie Sheldon.]
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a delightful, mystical story about a young girl who surprises her grandparents with her existence and goes on a wild adventure in the mountains of Washington State. Through legends and history, Charlie tells the story of a world before us, using the spirit of a child. It changes the lives of everyone around her. He really captures the ongoing struggle of tribes that are trying to hold onto their heritage and legends, while fighting the modernization of the world around them. This issue creates a daring and action-packed backdrop to this story. I simply can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is extremely well edited. I did find one error in the first chapter of the book, where a word was left out. However, I do not feel like it was a big enough issue to remove a star completely. There is some profanity present in the book, but it is rather low key for the most part. I really liked the way Charlie presents the story within the story. It keeps you reading chapter after chapter. You want to get to that next page, to see what will happen. I became a little addicted to this one. It has the power to keep you up at night, because you don’t want to put it down. I did not find anything I disliked about the book. There are characters I love to hate though. Charlie has a way of creating the individual personalities and describing his characters in a way that allows the readers to visualize them and their actions. His writing style draws you in and allows you to get lost in the pages. To me a good book forms a movie reel in the mind of the reader, so much so, that they are no longer reading words, but watching them unfold. This book created that experience for me. I can honestly say that I will be recommending this book to family and friends as must read.
I would recommend this book for young adults, teenagers, and adults. People who love history, especially Native American history would really enjoy this book, and I do believe the whole series. Those that enjoy the outdoors, would be able to relate well to the characters in the book. It really is a great read.
