Child of the Sun: Complete Edition by Michael Van Cleve is a collection of seven comic books. Each graphic novel has a different set of artists.

This collection of graphic novels is based on biblical figure Samson. Beside him, we have some other famous characters. There are Hercules, Manoah, Theseus, and of course, Delilah. The storyline follows a younger Samson, and his life before he became one of the last Israeli judges. Needless to say, we all know how he dies, and what happened to him by falling in love with Delilah. But in this graphic novel, the author explores his past and what lead to that. What kind of person was Samson? What about his family and friends? Who was his first wife? That is just some of the questions that are the plotline in this novel.

I am not, by any means, an expert on graphic novels. Still, I loved and enjoyed reading this collection. This is a work of art. The illustrations are exceptional and beautiful. However, my favorite part is the story arc. The author did an amazing job with it. If you are even a bit familiar with the story of Samson, you will notice the little details that are used in the storyline. But there are still some interesting creative liberties and twists on the familiar story. For example, we think of Hercules as a Greek version of Samson. Here the author uses that tidbit, adds him in the story, and makes them friends. I find that a brilliant and innovative idea.

I can’t rate this collection any less than a perfect four out of four stars. There were no grammatical errors. The editing is outstanding. Besides that fact, I found nothing that I disliked about it. As a graphic novel novice, reading this enthralled me. Even if every novel can stand on its own, it would be a waste not to read them all. I think, as a collective, these novels make a cohesive masterpiece. I am sure all the readers will enjoy it.

Even though Samson is a familiar character in Christianity and Judaism, I wouldn’t restrict the readers with that fact. I truly feel that all graphic novel readers will enjoy reading this, despite their religion or lack thereof. Keep in mind that there is a lot of explicit scenes, so this is fit only for a mature audience. There are many erotic scenes, but interestingly, I didn’t encounter any profanity.
