What’s Your Favorite Color? By Amber L Lassiter is a children’s book aimed to get children actively thinking. It tells the story of Amber, a beautiful little girl, who enjoys school. One day, Amber arrives at school to find out that they will be painting, using their favorite color. Each student was instructed to come into school wearing an item in their favorite color. As readers, we don’t know Amber’s favorite color, until the end of the book. Amber faces a problem in school, she has forgotten her watercolors at home, and she doesn’t want to use the ones in school. Where will she get paints from? Will she finish her painting in time?

What I noticed in the book was that the color of the text was adjusted to the background color on each page. This is very important because if the text is a similar color to the background, it would be difficult to read the words. Also, I really liked the cover of the book; it’s colorful, which means it will capture the attention of kids. In addition to that, an aspect of the book I enjoyed reading, was the dedication the author writes at the start of the book, to their parents. I thought it was really sweet, and it put me in a happy mood. One of the best parts of the book was the pictures. The pictures are beautifully created, and it really showcases the emotions the characters are feeling. Furthermore, not only is this book a great read for children but it is also very educational. Children can use this book to learn colors because the author describes the colors in a way that children can remember it. For example, “sunny yellow”, “cotton candy pink” and “ocean blue”.

Throughout the book, the author has written questions at the end of the pages. For example, “How did Amber feel when she found out Michael thinks he knows a secret about her? How do you know?”. I think putting questions in the book is a great concept because it stimulates children’s minds, and gets them thinking and discussing. This, in turn, could help develop their conversations and vocabulary range. What follows these questions is a blank area in the book that the children can use to write down their thoughts.

There was nothing in the book that I disliked. The author did an amazing job writing and creating it. I will say though, that children, between the ages of 3-5, may need assistance reading it because there are some words that they may find difficult to pronounce, for example, “crocheted” and “masterpieces”.

In conclusion, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I think it’s a great book to get children to actively think, and it will help them learn their colors too. I found no mistakes in the book, so this means it was professionally edited. I definitely recommend this book to children between the ages of 3 to 8.

I totally agree with you. Questions in a book stimulate a child's mind.
