[Following is a volunteer review of "Apollo's Raven" by Linnea Tanner.]
Beautiful Celtic princess and fierce warrior, Catrin, has a life-altering secret. She can connect with ravens in a supernatural way and is rumored to be a powerful sorceress. While the Romans invade her kingdom, Catrin meets Marcellus, the son of a Roman governor, who is taken hostage by her family. With a dark curse looming over Catrin’s life and her forbidden love for Marcellus blossoming, can Catrin tackle the challenges of what is to come in order to save her kingdom and break the curse, or will her love for Marcellus only fulfill the curse and bring her kingdom to ruin?
The intrigue about the unfolding of a mythological dark curse and a classic forbidden love, all set around 24 A.D., had me hooked from the very first page. Linnea Tanner, author of Apollo’s Raven, has the perfect combination of biting detail, adventurous thrill, mysterious magic, and consuming passion in her book. Every one of the main characters played their roles extremely well throughout the story, and the side characters brought a pleasant addition to the story. When I finally finished the book, I was left hungry for more and ready to start the next book.
Catrin’s determination to do what is best for everyone she loves, even after being accused as a traitor, is one of my many favorite things about this story. She fights using her instincts and her connection with ravens to understand what no one else does about the coming attack on her kingdom. My least favorite thing about this book, while I understand was essential to the story, were the gruesome descriptions of what Marrock, one of the antagonists, did in the forest at night. I found them interesting and disturbing at the same time.
Overall, I immensely enjoyed this book. While there were a few punctuation errors, they rarely occurred, are not extremely noticeable, and did not take away my enjoyment of the book. There were some sexual scenes and thoughts that occurred. There were also gruesome scenes that involved death and blood however they did not last terribly long. This book is not for sensitive readers or young children.
I give this amazing book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would happily recommend this story to someone who loves historical fiction, mythological intrigue, and blooming romance. I cannot wait to read the sequel and see Catrin and Marcellus again in their next epic adventure.
