[Following is a volunteer review of "Homeward" by Denis Pickwell.]
Homeward is a book filled with poems by Denis Pickwell, which he wrote all throughout the years. A few of the topics that the poems deal with are: loneliness, happiness, truth, reality, worry and nostalgia. Each poem deals specifically with one topic. They can each be divided into two parts: the verse and the explanation. The verse (poem) is very subjective, emotional and raw. And the explanation tries to give a bit more insight into the author’s thoughts behind the poem.
The book starts off with an introduction, giving the readers what to expect in the next pages. Denis Pickwell explains how the poems can be understood as easily as possible. He expresses his goal of giving each reader their own unique “inner experience” through his poems. The verses are there to help the reader reach a deeper understanding towards the topic.
Denis Pickwell deals with common themes that everyone faces throughout their lives. Therefore, anyone can find something to relate to in his words. One can relate through a common experience, a similar emotion or even through the same thoughts. As you read this book, you embark on a journey. You feel more connected to your spirituality and discover that some words resonate within you.
The thing I enjoyed the most, was the explanation behind every poem. I found myself being able to understand the poem more by the explanation, which sometimes was a personal story or a situation. It truly showed the author’s goal of trying to make the meaning come across to the reader. However, the poem and its words are for each to find their own subjective meaning.
It is important to note, that the book is based on the author’s faith in his religion. It is a religious book, for the mere fact that God is ever-present in Denis Pickwell’s life. And he makes various mentions to God, the Spirit, Heaven and Hell. Religion is also used to explain various topics, such as reality and truth.
The book is professionally edited. And I could find no spelling mistakes. I could not find anything I disliked about the book. Therefore, I have to rate it four out of four stars. This book is a helping tool for anyone who wishes to find answers in religion and in God. It gives a guiding light to understand various aspects of life.
All in all, it is a book for those who are religious. Especially for those that believe in God and find their spirituality in religion. It is apt for readers of all ages and I would recommend reading some poems out loud to enjoy it more.
“But what are words? Ideas expressed in sound.”
