Emergency Alert: An Immersive Novel by O. W. Showe is a Mystery/Thriller about citizens who are in a panic due to the current global pandemic. This novel focuses on a community that is impacted by strict government rules and a deadly virus that takes no prisoners. In each chapter, a new character is introduced and we see how the virus is impacting their lives. This novel seems very insensitive considering the current global pandemic that is impacting all of our communities.

I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. I feel that this book was professionally edited. I did not note any grammatical or spelling errors. Relying on alternative media to create the “immersive” aspect of this novel really undermined its potential. In a way, I believe that the author’s attempt to make the novel immersive had the opposite effect on the reader. The videos included in the novel take away from the content, rather than add to it by interrupting the flow of the story and causing the reader to break concentration. Many times, I had to go back and read entire pages again to try to process what I had initially read. The book is very confusing and muddled due to the unnecessary clips.

The only positive thing that I can say about this book is that the author’s use of imagery is impressive. However, I wish that they had paid as much attention to the characters in the story as they did to describing the scenes. The author jumps around from character to character with little to no character development whatsoever. We are introduced to several characters throughout the novel, but I do not feel that I know anything about the characters as individuals.

I’m very confused by much of the content in this book. In Chapter 4, the link took me to the "Mail" application on my iPhone. There was a prewritten email that said: “Where is Chapter 4?” Out of curiosity, I sent the email. There has been no response at this time. I am forced to wonder if these things were intentional or if there is an issue with the external media that was added to the book that has not been resolved.

My biggest complaint about this novel is that I cannot determine what the author’s message is. I am left with more questions than answers upon completion of this story. It seems that the author did not have any intention in relaying a message through this novel and that they are simply attempting to make an easy profit off of our current global state. I will not be recommending Emergency Alert: An Interactive Novel to anyone.
