The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a modern crime and mystery novel about the investigations of Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan of the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Known for his instinct and being able to connect the dots where others cannot, Sheehan is left with a delicate case when Judge Neeson is left murdered in his apartment. The crime scene is gruesome, and the killer seemingly left no clues. Between interviewing witnesses who are hiding something, and the pattern of these murders continuing, it seems Sheehan and his team struggle more and more to understand this case and what is going on in the killer’s mind. It takes stumbling onto the killer’s blog on the dark web that the investigation starts to make at least some sense. What the blog reveals is a person bent on vengeance, and ready to stop at nothing to enact their deadly plan. Will they be able to stop the killer before it’s too late? Who is this deadly person?

The vocabulary in the story is very rich and I found myself having to grab my dictionary to understand what was being said a few times. It didn’t detract from the story in any way for me as I learned a few new words, but for those looking for an easy read, I would say this is not it. There is also profanity in this book, and while the worst of the profanity is starred out in portions of the word, a reader can tell what the word is supposed to be. The novel also has sexual crimes in it, both attempted and performed. There are also graphic depictions of drugging and murder of victims. If a reader is sensitive to any of these issues, it is best to avoid the book.

The thing I liked most about this book was the story itself. It was riveting. The plot was great and it was difficult to put the book down. The idea of a psychopath on a murder spree of vengeance because someone he loved was sexually assaulted and then died accidentally was intriguing. I also liked the inclusion of the dark web and the taking down of a den of iniquity that served illegal and atrocious tastes. There were just so many facets to the novel that kept me guessing until the end.

The thing I disliked most about the novel was the number of characters in it. There were just too many. The author tried to help this out by putting a list and description of each character before the start of the actual story, but it was just too much information to take in and remember. Scenes, where there were eight or nine people talking, were just easier to imagine as one or two people talking. I think it also took away from the main character of the story too. It didn’t detract from the story overall, because the story was so good, but it was noticeable.

Overall, this was a great book. Due to many of the disturbing things found in the book, it is not a children’s or young adult book. This would be best suited for adults looking for a good crime book. I think it would also be a great book for anyone looking to get into crime novels. I would keep a dictionary nearby, just in case. This story rates 4 out of 4 stars.
