[Following is a volunteer review of "One Way or Another" by Mary J. Williams.]
One Way or Another [/] by Mary J. Williams is a romance novel starring an upper-class woman, Calder, who meets a working-class man in a chance encounter. Calder is anything but snobbish. She runs a successful non-profit and spends her time with her three sisters. The chance encounter, of course, leads to more and romance ensues. Although the story line is expected in a romance novel, the author manages to make this scenario seem fresh and new with her lovable and not so lovable characters.
The character development by Mary J. Williams is definitely worth bragging about. The author gives us an up-close and personal look into the lives of the Benedict sisters in their Manhattan mansion. I instantly fell in love with this tight-knit group of sisters and the way the author portrayed their relationship.
The author also makes you swoon for the main man, Adam, with her development of his character. Adam is a hardworking and enigmatic man who grew up with a single mom in a lower class neighborhood. The romance is electric, although nothing that hasn't been done before in so many other romance novels. The author has her readers hooked and rooting for the relationship from the first chance encounter of the two main characters.
The author included some not so lovable characters that cause just the right amount of conflict in the lives of the Benedict sisters. These include their mother, fathers, and their mother's questionable new boyfriend.
The only thing that I didn't like about this book was the style of writing. The author uses a lot of choppy sentences and asides that can be distracting. It seems like she was using this style to portray the personalities of the two main characters. I did end up reading her other books in this Sister's series and the writing does not have the same choppy style. Due to the highly punctuated style of writing, the dialogue and thought lost some of the flow of the literary language of books.
Overall I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. Even with the sometimes odd style choices, I fell in love with the characters and could not put down this book. I recommend to anyone who loves a good romance. This is a quick read that would be perfect for the beach. I would not recommend this book for children, as there are instances of profanity and inappropriate content. One Way or Another is a great story about family and love.
