I rate "Strong Heart" four out of four stars. The book is well-written and I didn't find any misspelled words or grammatical errors. There were no sexual or vulgar instances throughout the book. It is about a young, teenage girl, named Sarah, who was tossed between many family members who didn't want her. She left her dad's house to stay with her grandmother, who then takes her to her grandfather's house because she was tired of her and said she didn't want to deal with her anymore.

It was definitely upsetting to read such a sad story of a troubled teen that not even her family wanted. Her Grandfather, Tom, was disappointed to take on such an important role, but he did and didn't kick her out. He wasn't very welcoming at first, but he started to soften up to the idea when his friend, William, told him it may be a good idea for her to learn her heritage.

The family is Native American and Tom was planning a camping trip to see his grandfather's gravesite where Tom had buried him at a young age. He didn't want Sarah to go, but William was right, she did need to learn of her heritage. They ended up going on this hike, and Sarah learned a lot from her grandfather and his troubled past, which actually seems to be like her, aside from him being drafted for the Vietnam War. This gave Sarah insight and she seemed a bit more respectful toward her grandfather.

The details in this story were impeccable. He gave a description of what the hiking trail looked like when his great-great-grandfather settled in that land hundreds of years ago, and I could see it in my mind so vividly. Also, the description of what he saw and heard on the rock where he was sitting when his father collapsed to his death. He didn't hear him after he heard an ax chopping, and when we woke from a nap, there was no smoke of a fire being started. This description actually gave me the chills.

This type of story would be a good read for troubled teens and young adolescents. It gives a sort of hope that there is somebody out there that cares for you, whether family or not. I enjoyed how the book represents embracing and learning of your heritage, especially since many people lose that over time.
