[Following is a volunteer review of "The Dark Web Murders" by Brian O'Hare.]
Trevor Neeson, a local judge, is murdered brutally by someone. The detectives find no clues at the crime scene and the investigation becomes a difficult task. All the members of Detective Sheehan’s team engage themselves in their duties to find any sign that would lead them ahead in the case. People who had attended the party at Judge Neeson’s house, few hours before his murder, are the main suspects. In the meantime, one more murder is attempted and the team is shocked to see that the MO of this murder is exactly the same as the previous one. Murders are attempted one after another and the detectives have the least idea about the serial killer. But one day one of the detectives finds something on the “Dark Web” and that changes the whole scenario.
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a murder mystery full of suspense, thrill and action. It is the fourth book in the series, The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries, but also stands on its own. The reader can enjoy the book even without reading the previous ones in the series. The book is based on the murder mystery of a local judge. The investigation reveals some horrific and awful details about the nasty things that are happening around in Northern Ireland. The book provides some extensive details about the “Dark Web” — a gruesome place for all sort of illegal and ghastly activities. It also contains a lot of sadistic and extreme sexual violence details.
The plot is well developed and maintains the interest of the reader throughout the novel. The author provides details of the characters of the book in the beginning and it actually helps the reader to connect well. The language of the book is British and common British phrases are used at many places. The book contains many profane words and phrases as it deals with the crime world. Though the reader is able to guess the reason or motive behind the murders at an early stage in the novel, one cannot guess the murderer till the very end. The art of characterization of some individuals is so powerful that one keeps on guessing about the killer till the last and that really helps the reader to be thrilled and engaged.
There are some blogs written by the serial killer, justifying his mass killing and that’s my most liked part of the book. The author has done a great job while structuring those intriguing sentences, displaying the high intellect of the killer. There are many philosophical terms and details but they never appear boring or enervating; they add curiosity to the plot.
The things that I disliked about the book are the lengthy details of some characters, for example, the details of the suspects that Edgar gives to the detectives. The author could have made them shorter or more interesting. They appeared a bit monotonous to me.
Overall, the book was a great read, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I would say it is professionally edited. Though I found a few typographical errors, they didn’t cause any hindrance while reading. Thus, I would rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to the people who are looking for some great mystery books full of suspense and thrill. As it has non-borderline profanity, I would not recommend it to children and also not to the people who are sensitive to read about horrific sexual abuse details.
